Calling all superheroes, lovers of comic books, video games, action-packed thrillers, Sci-Fi’s, and fans of the Star Wars saga, it’s that time of year again – FAN EXPO Canada ($25 for a single day pass)! From August 30 to September 2, people of all ages descend to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre for a chance to see their favourite characters and purchase exclusive merchandise to add to their collection.

One of the highlights of FAN EXPO Canada and other similar events across the country is the cosplay (costumes + play = cosplay). People will spend countless hours creating such an epic costume that you would be forgiven for thinking it was the actual costume someone famous wore.

However, then there are those whom you can tell gathered their costume last minute. They just don’t compare. Don’t let this be you – try one of these awesome characters to dress up as for FAN EXPO Canada.

The new Venom movie comes out this year, and with it being a Marvel movie, you know this will be an option for cosplay. A creepy black alien-like figure attaches itself to a human host to become a great threat to humans.

Sound interesting? You can make your muscular Venom costume with this DIY video, followed by a DIY Venom mask.

Alternatively, you can buy a very realistic Venom Muscle Suit costume on Etsy… for only $3,000.

Another anticipated hero movie is DC’s Aquaman. We first saw the sea god in Justice League, who is the king of Atlantis and can control the sea.

Here’s a list of all the materials you’ll need to make yourself look somewhat like Jason Momoa’s Aquaman. There is also this DIY video to help you make the armour he wears.

Han Solo

Go as the Galaxy’s greatest scoundrel with a Han Solo cosplay. Solo: A Star Wars Story came out earlier this year and unlike the trailers made it out to be, it was thoroughly enjoyable. Who doesn’t love the charismatic Han Solo that always finds himself in trouble?

Here’s a helpful step-by-step guide to making an easy Han Solo costume that will make you look cool.

Of course, you need to include the badass Qi’ra needs if we’re talking about Solo: A Star Wars Story. She is Solo’s love during his younger years (any more information could be a spoiler, so watch the movie to learn more about her).

You’ll find everything you need here to make your epic Qi’ra costume that everyone will recognize.

Another #sidebyside for good measure.

Jon Snow

With the final season of Game of Thrones finally descending upon us early next year, go as the beloved Jon Snow. A true hero who risks his life for his friends and family, can fight with death, and has pursued a questionable romance, Jon Snow is a favourite for cosplay.

There is a blog dedicated to Jon Snow Cosplay, so you’ll find everything you need to make your own replication there.

He came, he conquered, and he irritated a lot of civilians, but we still love him. Of course, we’re talking about Deadpool. He’s a different type of superhero as he’s vulgar and inappropriate, yet still somehow manages to save the day.

Here is a full tutorial on making your Deadpool costume. All you need to do is channel your inner sarcasm.

These are my top six choices for cosplay characters for FAN EXPO Canada 2018. However, the list of ideas is endless. Pick your favourite character that relates to you from any movie, book, game, or even television series and create away. With superhero movies killing it in Hollywood, you’ll never run out of ideas to dress up as every year.
